Betty Club Mbitjana
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Betty Club Mbitjana is the daughter of renowned artist Minne Pwerle and the sister of artist Barbara Weir. She is from the Utopia region of the Northern Territory (350km north east of Alice Springs).
Betty’s Club Mbitjana’s “Body Paint” works represent the designs the women paint on their bodies and the dancing tracks made in the sand during sacred women’s ceremonies. Through the “Awelye” ceremonies, the women pay homage to their ancestors and show respect for their country.
The designs they use have been passed down for many generations, and only the Pwerle or Kemarre owners can paint them. Betty Club Mbitjana paints in a style similar to her famous artist mother Minnie Pwerle (1910-2006). Betty’s paintings have gained a strong following and she will certainly be an artist to watch over the coming years.
